What are Medals: Significance & Different Types

What are medals? This article will explore the significance of medals and their different types, helping you understand these symbolic ornaments.

What are Medals?

A medal is a small, portable object that features an artistic design or inscription on its surface. It may be adorned with ribbons or chains, allowing the recipient to wear or display it as they please.

Medals serve a variety of purposes, including commemorating achievements, recognizing service, and expressing religious devotion. Some are also simply kept to be admired for their artistic design. They have been an important part of human culture for centuries, with examples dating back to ancient Greece and Rome.

The term “medal” first appeared in English in 1578. While its exact etymology is debated, it is believed to be related to the Latin words “medialis” (meaning “middle”) or “metallea” (meaning “metal coin”). The word “medallion” shares a similar origin but it is used to refer to larger medals with more intricate designs.

How are Medals Made?

Medals are typically produced using one of two methods: casting or stamping. In casting, molten metal is poured into a mold and allowed to cool, solidifying it into the desired shape of the medal. In stamping, a blank piece of metal will be placed between two dies and struck with a hammer to form the medal design.

Although medals are usually made with metals such as gold, silver, bronze, and copper, they can also be created using other materials like PVC rubber, wood, or plastic. The choice ultimately depends on the medal’s purpose and symbolism.

Different Types of Medals

Medals come in many shapes and forms, with sizes ranging from a fraction of an inch to those as large as four inches and above. They can be broadly categorized by their design and intended use. Here are some of the most common types:

Award Medals

This type of medal is issued for outstanding achievements in various fields, such as military service, sports, or academics. Examples of award medals include the Medal of Honor, the Nobel Prize, and the Olympic gold medal. They are often highly coveted and can bring great honor and prestige to their recipients.

Order Medals

Order medals are often associated with fraternal organizations or government and awarded to members who have made significant contributions. The recipients would wear the order medals on special occasions or as part of a formal uniform, reflecting their high achievement within the organization.

Society Medals

Society medals are handed out within organizations, such as professional associations, alumni groups, fraternal societies, etc, during enrollment or to commemorate special occasions. They often feature the society’s emblem or motto, symbolizing the recipient’s membership.

Art Medals

Art medals are primarily created to express artistic values, not to be worn or used for any practical purposes. This trend was widespread in the Renaissance era when artists like Pisanello used medals as a medium to showcase their skills and experiment with new techniques, so you would see art medals featuring intricate designs or incorporated with unique material combinations.

Portrait Medals

Portrait medals are used to commemorate individuals, from historical leaders to celebrities and even loved ones. They feature a detailed portrait on one side and sometimes have relevant inscriptions, such as the person’s name, birthday, or age on the other side.

Originally developed in Ancient Rome to honor royalty and other notable figures, portrait medals drastically evolved in the Renaissance when artists shifted their focus to humanist ideals, leading them to capture the essence of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Table Medals

Table medals, distinguished by their substantial size, are designed to be displayed rather than worn. These impressive pieces are often crafted with intricate designs and high-quality materials, making them ideal for decorative centerpieces to offer a lasting tribute to the people or occasions they represent.

Religious Medals

Religious medals, worn as personal expressions of faith, often feature religious figures, symbols, or prayers. These small but meaningful items can offer comfort, protection, or inspiration for their wearers, as a daily reminder of their belief.
